Things to Do: Memorial Day Weekend

The unofficial start of the summer is here! The Colony is home to 23 miles of shoreline and dozens of outdoor adventures, making it the ideal place to relax with a summer state of mind. Check out our comprehensive list of how to spend your long weekend.

Unwind Lakeside

Nothing says summer like warm days spent on the sandy shoreline inside Stewart Creek Park. The park features a recently renovated swim beach, two playground areas, pavilions, picnic tables, BBQ grills, sand volleyball, a three-lane boat ramp and plenty of parking. If you prefer to hike or bike, check out the scenic Shoreline Trail, located adjacent to the park’s entrance.

Reel in the Catch of the Day

Lewisville Lake is home to an array of fish including catfish, bass, and white crappies. Cast a line from the expansive fishing dock at Stewart Creek Park or charter a boat from Sam’s Dock inside Hidden Cove Park to reach deeper waters. Be sure to check out the Texas Parks and Wildlife website to determine daily bag and length limits during your trip. No fishing pole for the holiday weekend, no problem. The Colony Public Library offers fishing rods and tackle rental to library cardholders (registration is free).

Rent Party Boats and Paddleboards

Hidden Cove Park and Marina is the perfect spot to set up camp and enjoy the long weekend. The park is full of amenities including watercraft rentals. Rent a variety of party boats, compact powerboat and wave runners from Sam’s Dock, or paddleboards and kayaks from DFW Surf. During the holiday weekend, check out DFW Surf’s guided tours and paddleboard classes, including the popular Sunset Paddle and a Pint, craft beer social. While inside Hidden Cove, make sure to check out Rockin’ S Bar & Grill for lunch or dinner on the floating patio.

Pitch a Tent or Book a Cabin

Both Stewart Creek Park and Hidden Cove Park and Marina offer tent and RV camping opportunities. If you’re more of a greatindoors kind of person, you can enjoy nature from the comfort of a cabin or bunkhouse at Hidden Cove. Cabins accommodate up to six people and offer a quaint kitchenette and living space. If you are bringing more than five friends along, the rustic bunkhouses are the perfect escape. These massive units come fully furnished with a kitchen and living room area, providing a space for up to 16 or 24 people.

Get a Local Taste with Brews on Tap

Craft and specialty beers are on tap across The Colony, but you will find two breweries creating truly local brews. Beard Science specializes in souring processes that you won’t find elsewhere in North Texas. Their wild sours are fermented with naturally occurring yeasts for a distinctly local taste. The sour house’s sister concept, Truck Yard, offers live music all weekend long on the shared stage. Windmills is more than your standard brewery, the restaurant-meets-jazz lounge is fermenting its own small-batch brews on-site. Curate a flight from over 14 beers, which pair excellently with the Indian-Texan fusion served up daily.

Rock out to Live Music

It’s clear that The Colony is a haven for music lovers, bringing chart-topping bands and boundary-pushing artists to stages across the city. Discover hometown favorites almost any night of the week at Lava Cantina. The Bourbon Street-themed concert venue serves up Creole-Mexican fusion fare for a rockin’ dinner and a show. On Friday evenings, get outdoors for a concert at The Stage at Grandscape or on the dog-friendly patio at The Shacks. Check out our Facebook Events page for scheduled performances and other events during Memorial Day weekend.
